Referrals into our specialized residential programs are made through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Resource Unit. These programs are intended for pre-planned longer-term placement and not emergency stays. Placement of referred children and youth is contingent on an appropriate mix with the other residents in the home. The typical profiles of youth served by the specialized homes are predominantly youth with Mental Health concerns, severe behaviour problems, attachment disorders and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). These youth have often experienced multiple placement breakdowns or disappointments and have developed deep mistrust for care providers. Neither the youth or the care providers have failed; the youth are simply not suited for family or foster home settings and require the supervision and attention provided in a staffed environment. The programs focus on stabilization and offer a nurturing environment that best suits their needs. All homes provide 24 hour a day support, with professional, skilled staff. Our programs aim to stabilize the youth and to prepare him/her for either family-based care or independent living through individualized service delivery plans. The aim of the program is not to "treat" the youth, but to prepare a care-giving context to "fit" the needs of the youth. Staff members work closely with community mental health teams and receive regular consultation and clinical supervision from a Connexus Psychologist and Psychiatric Nurse. Each individual is supported to participate in recreational activities that promote healthy lifestyles. Our staff are trained and experienced in providing the supports appropriate to the needs of the youth who live in our care. We strive to provide a fun, relaxed and safe environment to support the youth to achieve their individual goals and enhance their personal growth. The vision of the homes is to provide a safe and nurturing atmosphere allowing opportunities to maximize their independence. |
